Description

A defoamer is a chemical additive used to prevent or eliminate foam in industrial liquids by breaking the surface tension of foam bubbles. Common defoamer ingredients include silicone-based compounds, mineral oils, waxes, and hydrophobic solids like silica, often dispersed in a carrier fluid like water or oil. They are widely used in manufacturing, cleaning, and wastewater treatment to maintain efficiency and prevent equipment damage.

What defoamers do

  • Break down foam: Defoamers disrupt the surface tension of foam bubbles, causing them to collapse and the foam to dissipate.
  • Prevent foam formation: They can also be added to prevent excessive foam from forming in the first place.
  • Improve efficiency: By controlling foam, defoamers prevent issues like vacuum system damage in cleaning equipment, reduced pump capacity in wastewater treatment, and quality defects in products like paint.

Common types and ingredients

  • Silicone-based defoamers: These are very common and use silicone compounds to reduce foam.
  • Mineral oil-based defoamers: These use mineral oils as the primary active ingredient.
  • Other formulations: Many defoamers are a combination of a carrier fluid (like water, mineral oil, or vegetable oil) and active ingredients such as hydrophobic silica, waxes, or certain polymers.

How they are used

  • Add to the process: Defoamers are typically added directly to the liquid in which foam is a problem.
  • Different from cleaning agents: They should not be confused with foaming agents; for example, in cleaning, defoamer is added to the recovery tank, not the solution tank where the soap is.
  • Application method: Depending on the product, they can be added during processing or sprayed onto existing foam.
