Polyacrylamide (PAM) is a synthetic polymer used in agriculture and water treatment to bind soil particles and remove suspended solids. It is highly water-soluble and acts as a soil conditioner to reduce erosion and increase water infiltration, and as a flocculant to cause fine particles in water to clump together and settle out. PAM is available in various forms, including anionic, cationic, and nonionic, with properties that vary based on chain length and other factors.  

In agriculture
  • Erosion control: 

    PAM stabilizes soil particles, which reduces erosion caused by wind and water. 

  • Water infiltration: 

    It increases the volume of pores in the soil, allowing more water to soak in and less to run off. 

  • Nutrient retention: 

    By reducing runoff, it can help retain fertilizers and pesticides in the soil. 

  • Application: 

    It is applied as a dry granule, block, or liquid directly into irrigation furrows or ditches, often requiring agitation to dissolve properly. 

In water treatment
  • Flocculant: PAM is used to treat industrial and municipal wastewater. 
  • Particle removal: It causes small, suspended particles to clump together into larger “flocs”. 
  • Clarification: These flocs settle out more quickly, which clarifies the water and aids in the dewatering of sludge.
